Synology DS1621+ is a powerful and compact 6-bay network attached storage solution designed to store and protect critical data assets. Today’s growing amount of unstructured data requires smarter and increasingly higher performance methods of storing, accessing, and collaborating. Designed for scalability, DS1621+ enables you to start small, then expand as your data grows.
DS1621+'s dual M.2 2280 slots allow NVMe SSD caching to boost performance by 20x or more for commonly accessed data. It also supports an optional 10GbE NIC for faster network environments and more concurrent users.
With comprehensive support for all major file sharing protocols — like CIFS, AFP, NFS, FTP and more — DiskStation lets you centralize files in one place and access them using any device. Take files on the road or easily share them with other people, thanks to Synology's easy file sharing and syncing software.
Ensure data remains safe by backing up your computers, servers, and virtual machines to DiskStation, and defend yourself from human-error or ransomware with the multi-version backup. Finally, avoid disaster with the ability to easily back up DiskStation to an offsite location or to any major cloud service.
With support for VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft Hyper-V, DiskStation serves as a seamless storage solution for virtualization environments. Additionally, Synology’s Virtual Machine Manager also lets you set up and run various virtual machines directly on DiskStation, including Windows, Linux, and Virtual DSM.
Make your own video surveillance hub. Surveillance Station helps you protect your home or business by offering the ability to manage multiple network cameras, check live camera feeds from anywhere with the mobile app, catch suspicious incidents quickly with intelligent alerts, and easily find relevant recordings.

Flexibility, 6 bays, setup fairly easy. I’m using 6 4tb drives giving close to 18tb avg. I’m using it on a win 10 network with 4 total NAS units. Speed and function were exactly as I expected. I store photos and data files all critical. I expect long service from the unit, drives will be changed around the 2-4 yr service life on a 24/7 cycle.
This is my second Synology NAS and the price/features/quality/support is awesome. Running 6x Synology 8TB NAS drives, 2x 2TB Crucial P5 NVMe and 2x 16GB Arch Memory SO-DIMMs. No complaints!
Migration from my old Synology NAS couldn't be easier. Originally started with 4x drives in SHR-1 config and added two more drives and converted the storage pool to SHR-2 and expanded the volume. Took a long time (nearly a month), but couldn't been easier to do.
I was worried that the NAS work be underpowered. Worried for nothing. Works great. The built in software makes all the difference!
Unit arrived well packaged and in pristine condition. software was easy to install. initial volume creation for an SHR LUN 4 x 8 TB IronWolf NAS drives took about 12.5 hours. Link aggregation across the 4 x 1 GigE ports was easy and well-documented. Added a 16 GB DIMM without issue. Added a pair of m.2 drives for cache. Added a dual port 10 GigE SFP+ Intel 520 adapter which was trouble free which was aggregated for a 20 Gbps link. It would be nice to have a 2nd one for them to replicate between. maybe someday.
I needed to upgrade from another NAS that was almost a decade old. I finally had run out of space. I also wanted to be able to install Plex on the new NAS. Setting up a remote connection to my old NAS (which was not a Synology) and then having the files copy for about 36 hours (lotsa TBs) while I left it alone worked great. Setup was a snap, migration was easy, Plex installation worked first time. I'm a happy camper. Hopefully this NAS will last me another 10 years.
