I bought this security camera system because of unwanted trespassing on my property in the middle of the night. The company I work for have 5 cameras and the base unit on a ranch monitoring 2 large barns that are filled with expensive equipment and tools. After a couple of items stolen we installed these cameras and nothing more has been taken... these barns are a couple hundred feet apart and yet the farthest camera away from the base is still able to send a signal and have a great picture.
So, based on that I put this system on the exterior of my house. There is a bit of a delay but only slightly and it get an alert no mater where I am since I have the app on my phone! As far as my property survailance (information) being stored in the cloud on the Arlo servers for 7 days for anyone to see I say ... so what. Not much to see but my front gate and walkway. Happy viewing! I will be adding additional cameras as the budget allows. This was a good purchase and I'm glad I did it.
I have tried a number of different systems but the ARLO by Netgear has been outstanding. Battery life is about 90 to 100 days, clear picture, nice video clips and all managed by either my laptop or Android phones. I purchased the skins to help hide the cameras in my fake plants and unless you know where they are you cannot see the cams. The system was so easy to set up I couldn't believe it and after purchasing the initial system I added another cam. The price is right but more importantly the system works as advertised and you will NOT be disappointed! I would like to see Netgear's R & D department put together a night light that works as a night light and also doubles as a security camera that operates off an electrical outlet thereby eliminating the need for batteries as this would be great for any room or hallway where there's an outlet. I'll be the first to buy one if they make one for sale!
So far so good! My unit has definitely met my expectations for use as an exterior house camera that monitors my front door step. (Very helpful to see if deliveries by UPS and FedEx have been left on the doorstep while away at work.) There was only one day (yesterday) in which I was not email alerted -- I think perhaps that the main Arlo email system was not functioning for a couple of hours, however, thankfully I could still login and manual select the option to see a real time view of the door step, so I know the camera was working. Thankfully, everything was back to normal today as I just now received an email alert (spouse left the house via the front door). I have not had it long enough to know how long the batteries will last (I selected the option for longest battery life vs best quality video). In summary, I am very impressed with the performance and the options of the Arlo (BTW, my base station is a fair distance away from the camera and it works great. Not to mention, the camera is outside the house and has to send the signal through walls and around corners to reach the base station). Kudos to NetGear for a terrific product!
Excellent and easy to use, I'm also impressed with their android app. I'm using it as a pet web cam and to monitor my front door along with a traditional hardwired security camera system. The software is pretty solid and will only get better. I wish they included a mic so I could use the front door cam as an internet door bell since the camera motion sensor alerts me quickly enough on my smart phone to speak to who ever is at the door in realtime so they would think someone is at home. It might be a good idea add a microphone expansion kit in future. The fact that the cameras are weather proof is great since you can quickly move a camera to a trouble spot to see what is going on there. I was worried about battery life and that has not been a problem once I realized how to optimize my settings. The interface can be confusing at times but it's no more than a a small annoyance. This product has given me great peace of mind when I'm not at home and it's hard to put a price on that.
Update 8/11 - Now having issues with cams not giving accurate battery levels, it goes from full battery strength on display to red low battery level with no warning and this with running the latest firmware.
Bought this and shipped it to my mom because her house has been broken into multiple times. Love my mom, but she has next to zero tech knowledge. I was easily able to walk her through the setup, while I am 400+ miles away. On their website, they even have a video that you can watch (helped her to see that it didn't work the first time because she installed the batteries backwards!) But we got it done, in under 10 minutes (it should easily be done in under 10 for the average user with average tech knowledge). We temporarily have it set up inside until she can get a guy out to put it in it's permanent location, so we have been testing the motion detection and recording, and it does well so far inside, even in low light. I'm hoping outside will be just as good. I was able to log in via the app I downloaded, and got her recordings and sensitivity configured/customized. And bonus - I was able to add myself as a user, so she likes that I am also able to monitor if something happens. I had also bought her two lower level (since they are for inside) versions of the cameras we have (not Arlo), and am going to have to have someone go out to set those up, because I was not able to walk her through remotely, so needless to say, this one was well worth the extra money. I'm hopeful that I will still be as happy once we get it set up outside.
